MORE IDEAS:

Biofacts - Nothing draws kids over to a table like skulls! Do you have orangutan, human and gibbon skullcasts. Orangutan hair? Cast of hands? Put out a gorilla hand-cast. It’s a good way to show the comparison between long orangutan arboreal fingers vs. “knuckle walkers” like a gorilla.

This great handcast is available from Primateprints.com.

Handprints - Print out and laminate these orangutan size hands for guests to compare their own hands.

Primate Hand and Feet Files:

Coloring table -Cover a table with long white butcher paper and provide orangutan tracing STENCILS, crayons and markers (washable ones) - everyone has fun with this one! Or print out and make copies of these COLORING SHEETS

Where in the world are all the orangutans?
Print out the FILE (laminate if possible) and use under a classroom globe. See if kids can find Borneo and Sumatra. You can give the hint: It's on the equator. Provide a magnifying glass (attach a string to it and the globe). Ask, "Can you see the orangutans?" When they say, "No", you can say, "See, that's the problem!"

Orangutan Anagram
- Use a metal board (like an aluminum sign board) and toy magnetic alphabet letters for a word scramble game using orangutan related words. Make your zoo's orangutan's name a bonus word.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS:

Set up a small TV/VCR or portable DVD player to play videos of orangutans in the wild. Ralph Arbus has wonderful videos on his website and has given permission to use the photos and videos as long as it is in aid of orangutan survival, and not for a commercial purpose. Just right click on the thumbnail, “save target as”, and burn on a dvd.

Set up a CD player with headphones that people can put on to hear the rainforest sounds of Borneo or just play it without headphones for all to hear.
One great CD is by Bernie Krause: Kalimantan, "Heaven Before Time" which can be found online. It includes giboons singing and orangutan long calls.

BOOKS - Set out a few Orangutan books.
Zoobooks
has a wonderful Orangutan magazine.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN ORANGUTAN??
Make this fun interactive quiz binder.

Print out these two files on heavy cardstock and three hole punch for a binder. Use the Quiz sheet as your answer key.
